Our Story

Set in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter, Vault 88’s studio and workshop are run by husband and wife team Pete and Jean Smith. Together they bring more than 40 years’ experience in the jewellery trade, as well as a refreshingly friendly and personal approach.

Story from Pete ~

My working history in the jewellery began in the 1960's. I started my training in handmade wedding hands at Samuel Hope, a high end manufacturer whose reputation and workmanship was second to none. In those days we used to polish the rings in beer and the finish was amazing!! - something that is no longer done.

I moved on in the early 1970's to Wyatt and Green who were the largest jewellery manufacturers in Europe. Over the next few years I was taught to handmake the original designs of their engagement and dress rings, ear-rings and pendants becoming the head model maker at the company. I will always be grateful for the excellent training and wide knowledge I received there.

The next step was for me to start my own business, Vault 88 in Birmingham's renowned Jewellery Quarter where I specialise in bespoke jewellery. Since opening the shop we have met so many people, made so many different designs for all kinds of budgets and occasions. To produce a piece of jewellery that someone loves is very rewarding. It was also special to me that I was asked to make a piece for the wife of one of the family who trained me at Wyatt & Green as they are retired and no longer in the trade.
